Hair loss is an emotional issue. And yes, solution providers can sometimes make promises that sound too good to be true. This is never a good practice, and it’s especially troublesome when vulnerable people are the target. But one claim out there is both “true” and “good”: Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) can and should be accomplished in just one day.
The web is filled with skeptical chatter about one-day SMP. And it’s true, the vast majority of SMP providers—all of them except mine, as a matter of fact—administer the process over several visits. So it’s not surprising that much of the doubt and fear-mongering about one-day SMP comes from this camp. A shorter process presents a competitive advantage and a tangible business threat. I get that.
I also get that if you’re considering SMP, a multi-stage process might sound more “careful” and “conscientious” on the surface. After all, this is a complex procedure performed on a delicate area. But in fact, the exact opposite is true. As Good Look Ink’s Certified Impression Techs will tell you, multi-stage SMP is worse for the client for three big reasons:
- After day one, your skin is still healing. So re-opening the scalp and adding more pigmentation can lead to migration of the follicle replication.
Translation: If you receive SMP over many days, there’s a much greater chance that your finished hairline will be less precise.
- After day one, it’s much more difficult for the tech to see what was already done.
Translation: Because it’s harder to see which areas of your scalp still need pigmentation, mistakes are more likely.
- Skin takes time to heal and regrow, so if you back too soon for additional SMP work, it’s more likely that damage will be done to existing impressions.
Translation: Any future enhancements or corrections you may want might be more difficult to accomplish.
Bottom line: Be skeptical of the skepticism. One-day SMP is totally doable (99 percent of our procedures are accomplished in just one day). And not only is one-day SMP more convenient; it’s better for your scalp, your hairline and your confidence.
